Revolutionizing Geology with Moodle Quiz

Teaching

The study of mineralogy and petrology require students to become intimately familiar with an extensive array of facts and attributes about the materials in the field.  Traditionally, these facts would be learned through diligent, regular practice worksheet packets graded by an army of student TAs.  The intense workload of producing and grading these packets drained the time of the professor and the student TAs, and the slow turn-around of feedback to the students minimized the pedagogical impact of the study.  Enter Moodle Quiz: Students now complete these ‘packets’ online and get immediate feedback to their responses.  Grades are recorded automatically, and student TAs are now freed from grading to be more helpful to students taking the class.  Moodle Quiz has revolutionized how students learn their facts, improved the workflow for professor and TAs, and saved a forest of trees from being sacrificed!  During our presentation, we will show how we transferred hundreds of questions to the Moodle Quiz format, including tips on how to do this efficiently.
